Flowers on Nomi Island Nomi Island is a famous flower island that Hiroshima Prefecture is very proud of.
With a mild climate, average temperature of 15-16, the island even has frost-free zones. Smoothly stepped flower beds covering the island enjoy spring while the Chugoku Mountains are still snow-capped. The region is the largest flower producing area in the prefecture, with production ranging from highclass foreign orchids to popular flowers of many kinds such as carnations, chrysanthemums, roses, daisies, babies' breath, primroses and stocks, as well as potted flowers. This island prospered by producing flowers beginning in about 1930, although by the time of World War II, it had declined. After the war, however, a high demand by the occupation forces greatly helped the island recover its prosperity-even to the extent of calling for exclusive carnation raisers. Memo The Mitaka Flower Association erected a monument on November 26, 1986 with an epitaph reading, "On this site, in about 1948, Kunio Tatemichi began raising Mitaka Chrysanthemums, which Setsumi Higashi first cultivated. Flower raising has been established as an alternative to rice farming since 1971. At present, we are proud of Mitaka Chrysanthemums, which have reached the highest output in the prefecture."
