Roses in Fukuyama

The activity to promote "Rose City" in Fukuyama, which uses the slogan
"Flowers are beautiful, but more beautiful are the hearts of the people raising
them", originated in the planting of about 1,000 young roses as Rose Park in
1956.
Now, the planted roses invite new roses to be planted, and in the seasons of
blooming, spring and fall, 5,500 rose trees of 280 species, including the new
species "Rose Fukuyama," and donated rose trees from Germany, Canada and
European countries entwined with various stories, such as "the Rose of Anne
Frank," blossom in pink, red and yellow, filling the garden with dignity and
fragrance.
In 1967, Rose Park, which was generated by the "create rose city" activity
initiated by the citizens with the slogan, "May 100 people raising one rose
appear rather than one enthusiast raising 100 roses," was awarded the highest
award for a national activity to create beautiful towns. The epitaph
commemorating the award, "Here bloom flowers of good will," arouses empathy
among the citizens. The Rose Festival is held every May. In this festival,
various events, such as the Rose Contest and the Music Festival, are held
mainly in Rose Park.
